Warm up in Caloundra for spring racing It makes good horse sense to visit Caloundra’s Corbould Park on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast if you are a racing fan, or just out to enjoy a great social day, at one of the finest tracks in Australia that attracts some of the best thoroughbreds.

Corbould Park will host a Melbourne Cup meeting on Tuesday, November 2 and night racing starts at the track from Friday, November 12.

And who knows you might even get the early inside running for a Melbourne Cup tip. Trainer of the 2000 cup winner Brew, New Zealander Michael Moroney, is a fan of this track. He also based Victoria Derby winner Monaco Consul in Caloundra during the Caloundra Cup Carnival in July as part of the lead up to this year’s Melbourne spring carnival races.

Mr Moroney has over 40 Group One wins  to his credit and divides his time between his Flemington stables and a warm mid-year training base utilising new stable facilities at Corbould Park.

In fact Mr Moroney loves Caloundra so much he purchased an apartment at the stunning new Monaco complex in Bulcock Beach.

“It makes sense to set up a base at Caloundra for a few months where the winter climate benefits the horses being spelled or pre-trained to get them ready for spring racing,” Mr Moroney said.

“We can condition the horses better during the warmer winter and get ahead of our counterparts in southern states in regard to preparation for spring carnival racing.”

Mr Moroney said he planned to be back next year to again use the wide Corbould Park track and its soft cushion all-weather facilities.

The special feature race day is a celebration of the 25th birthday of horse racing on the Sunshine Coast. Some of the country's finest thoroughbreds will be in action chasing a share of over $140,000 in prize money.

Twenty-five years ago the site of the Sunshine Coast Turf Club at Caloundra was a snake infested swamp owned by Mr Corbould that turned into a world class racing complex.  The creation of Corbould Park is unique because most courses have been developed gradually from modest beginnings whereas the Corbould Park design engineers and architects started from scratch and produced a perfectly planned, fully functional and attractive new racing venue ready to see the first barrier rise. In recent time night lighting and state of the art stable facilities have been added. Trainers of very high regard now have some of their horses and teams based in Caloundra.

Visitors to the 25th Anniversary Cup Day can step up to a special luncheon in the Favourites function room with the best views of the finish line. Enjoy a 3 course lunch in style ($60 members, $70 non-members & $30 children). For all the kids attending the 25th Anniversary Cup, there will be free pony rides.

Entry to Corbould Park is $10 for adults, $5 for concession card holders and children under 18 free.  Gates open at 10.30am.
