Fun in the Sun Team Surfing Challenge

The Fun in the Sun Teams Challenge will be held on the 16th and 17th of October 2010 at one of Caloundra’s renowned surf beaches, either Happy Valley or Dicky Beach. Since 2001, the longboard competition has evolved into a significant and established event that involves friendly rivalry between teams of mixed ages and genders.

Each year, the Caloundra Malibu Club hosts this unique family oriented recreational surfing event. It is unlike most other competitions as it involves surfers competing against each other as members of a team rather than as individuals. Teams consist of a group of surfers; including a female, an over 40 year old, a junior (under 18 years), old mal surfer and an open surfer (any age or sex). The contest gives families, friends, businesses, clubs and social groups the opportunity to compete and enjoy a weekend at the beach.

The high level of surfing skills makes for an entertaining and exciting display for many people. Locals and interstate visitors will travel to participate in the event. This year a number of current local Australian longboard finalists and semi finalists will be competing including Scotty and Beth Palmer, Kathryn Hughes, Steve Miller and Jeff Perry. In the past, the event has seen former world longboard champion Josh Constable compete as well as former Australian longboard champions including Sharon Jackson, Mitch Surman, Grant Thomas and Damian Coulter.

The first heat of the event will begin at 7am on both days and will run for the entire weekend. The Caloundra Malibu Club will offer a food and beverage stall, including a BBQ staffed by volunteers. Throughout the event raffles will be drawn with the major prize being a Global Surf Industries surfboard. A wide selection of surfboards will be on display over the weekend, which will be provided by Noosa Longboards and Global Surf Industries. At the conclusion of the event, the finals will take place on Sunday afternoon followed by presentations and a surfboard auction.
